Itoku sails from Kar, considering himself an outcast. He was a faithful samurai to a Karanese lord, until the lord asked him to turn on his clan. He could not bear to kill his family, so he tried to free them. They forced him to watch as they killed his family before him, and he was blinded, so that it would be the last thing he sees. He was then left for dead, and he sees this as his greatest failure. He regained the will to live through carpentry, and judges those who do not better themselves through craft.
