The world was dying, that much was clear. For the past four hundred years, every landscape on the known horizon had been in decay. Shadows lengthened as the days shortened and the nights grew long; dark forests strangled abandoned towns in a tangle of thorny vines and bramble; riverbeds slowed to streams, then creeks, then trickles, and finally ran dry altogether; and the crops the remained were weak and fragile, suffocating in cracked earth. Many in Sysia had lost all hope, falling to the cries of despair from the crazed heralds on the streets that no longer seemed so crazy - and much throughout the land was lost and forgotten. Even the name Sysia lost out to a new moniker - the Twilands, lands of the setting sun.
Two months ago, something changed. A pulse of good fortune hit the Twilands like a front. Storms brought rain and seeds began to sprout. The sun seemed a little brighter, the forests a little lighter, the days a little longer. Water flooded down from the mountains, first forming little trickles in the riverbeds, then sputtering creeks, then burbling streams. It was all like magic - like Sysia was being given a second chance.
Even more exciting where the rumors that actual magic had returned the world. Fantastical claims spread like wildfire in taverns unable to keep up with the surge in business - the stories become wilder each time they were told. Priests were rediscovering how to heal the sick; wizards schools were rebanding to reclaim lost towers and lore; and druidic circles, thought to be extinct, were reawakening from their hibernation to restore balance to the natural world. For the first time in a long time, there was a need and opportunity for adventurers to explore and reclaim what some of what had been lost in what scholars dubbed the Age of Dark.
This, amongst your own reasons, is what has brought you to Madame Freona's Tea Kettle in the town of [[NOTION_PAGE:"Phlan"]]. Here, the eager and brave gather to take on the wilds and wonders under the shadow of [[NOTION_PAGE:"Evendraug, the Howling Mountain"]], as well as share stories while in the care of fine halfling hospitality. Unlike the surrounding towns, where adventures are looking upon with fear, suspicion, and sometimes outright disgust - Phlan was founded by former adventurers to be a safe haven for new ones - a place where thieves and paladins alike could learn to ply their craft. The world, after all, is still a dangerous place - and even those who detest the “ratcatchers”, their term for adventurers - still need their services from time to time.
How long will this peace and prosperity last? Many wonder with skepticism. With folks relearning to be something other than survivors, it is only a matter of time before the alliances formed to ensure their survival begin to fall to infighting - or worse, outright war. Still, for today, the world is safe. Tea is flowing from the kettle, served by Madame Freona’s seven daughters. At the table in the back, a crew of new adventurer’s is meeting for the first time… who are you?
